A phylum (often called a division in botany) represents a level of scientific classification below kingdom and above class. The name comes from the Greek φυλαί phylai, the clan-based voting groups in Greek city-states. Phyla and divisions organize animals by very general traits; all mammals belong the Phylum Chordata, for instance, whch includes all animals with spinal cords.
